Peruvian passport: what do you need, what does it cost, and how long is it valid?
Peru's electronic passport is issued by Migraciones inside Peru and by consulates abroad. At Migraciones it costs S/ 120.90 and is handed over the same day; it lasts 10 years for adults, 5 for ages 12 to 17 and 3 for children under 12, and a minor can go with just one parent.

Who issues it and how long it lasts
Inside Peru, the electronic passport is issued by the Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones (Peru’s immigration authority). Abroad, it is issued by the Foreign Ministry through Peruvian consulates (Ley 32205). RENIEC, the national ID registry, does not issue passports; it issues the DNI (the national ID card), which you need.
Validity is set by article 20-A of Legislative Decree 1350, added by Ley 31678:
| Holder’s age | Validity |
|---|---|
| 18 or older | 10 years |
| 12 to 17 | 5 years |
| Under 12 | 3 years |
On turning 18, the holder must apply for an adult passport (D.S. 009-2023-IN, art. 38). The old machine-readable (mecanizado) passport stopped being issued on 7 July 2016. If yours is still valid you can use it until it expires, but it cannot be renewed: after that you get an electronic one.
The right to a passport is in the Constitution. D.S. 002-2024-RE recalls that article 2, item 21, protects the right «a no ser privado del derecho de obtener o de renovar su pasaporte dentro o fuera del territorio de la República» (not to be deprived of the right to obtain or renew one’s passport inside or outside Peru).
Requirements, fee and delivery
According to the gob.pe page updated on 18 September 2026, an adult needs:
- Their most recently issued DNI, in good condition. For adults, an expired DNI does not block the procedure, as long as it is the latest one and the data are current (D.S. 009-2023-IN, art. 22-B).
- A payment receipt for S/ 120.90, code 01810 on Págalo.pe or at Banco de la Nación.
- A sworn statement of loss or theft, only if that applies to you.
You must attend in person because the biometric photo is taken on site. Someone else can pay for you, but you have to go. The passport is handed over the same day if you meet every requirement. If you do not collect it within 60 days, it is destroyed and you must apply again.
Service is at Migraciones offices, the Puruchuco and Villa María Migracentros, and several MAC centers (government one-stop service centers) in Lima and the regions. For people who cannot travel for health reasons, the regulation provides mobile enrollment: you request it through the Migraciones online filing desk (mesa de partes) with a medical diagnosis, Migraciones staff capture the biometric data with mobile equipment, and the passport is then handed over at an office (D.S. 009-2023-IN, art. 34-A).
Do you need an appointment? Official sources disagree
- The regulation (D.S. 009-2023-IN, art. 31) sets «contar con la cita virtual» (having an online appointment) as a condition. If you miss the appointment, at the end of that day Migraciones unlinks your receipt; you can book another appointment or ask for a refund.
- Migraciones’ gob.pe pages for adults (updated on 18 September 2026) and for minors still say service is by prior appointment (previa cita).
- A Migraciones press release of 27 May 2026 announces that from 1 June 2026 service is «sin necesidad de cita previa» (without a prior appointment), by order of arrival, within each office’s hours.
We do not know which applies today at each office. Check the official Migraciones page before you go.
Minors: one parent is enough
The child must attend in person, represented by at least one parent (D.S. 009-2023-IN, art. 33). The Migraciones page repeats the rule and asks for:
- The child’s DNI, valid and in good condition.
- The accompanying parent’s ID (DNI, or carné de extranjería or passport for a foreign parent). Their details must match those on the child’s DNI, to confirm parentage.
- The S/ 120.90 payment receipt and, if applicable, a sworn statement of loss or theft.
If a guardian or legal representative goes instead, they must show the judgment, order or public instrument that grants representation. In that case, if the child was born abroad, the original foreign birth certificate must also be shown.
Urgent travel
If you have a flight soon, the urgent-case page lets you apply within the two business days before the flight at Migraciones offices or MAC centers, or within the 8 hours before at the Jorge Chávez Airport office. You bring the PA form, your boarding pass or ticket, the receipt and the other requirements. The amount is the same, S/ 120.90, but the payment code is 01808. The same page gives code 01810 for topping up an old S/ 98.60 payment: if that is your case, confirm the code before paying.
The page also notes that you can travel to Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay and Paraguay with a valid DNI.
If it is lost or stolen
There is no duplicate. First you block the passport online: it is free and cancels it automatically. If you find it later, it is no longer valid. Then you apply for a new one, pay again, and bring the sworn statement of loss or theft. If you are abroad, you can also block it at a Peruvian consulate.
If you live abroad
D.S. 002-2024-RE lets you apply for the passport at any Peruvian consulate. You bring your DNI and the receipt for the consular fee. Validity is the same as in Peru. A minor is accompanied by one parent, by the attorney-in-fact of at least one parent, or by their legal guardian. We found no current official consular tariff, so ask your consulate for the amount.
How to file
- Pay the processing feePay S/ 120.90 on Págalo.pe with code 01810 or at Banco de la Nación, giving the DNI number of the person the passport is for. If you paid S/ 98.60 earlier, top it up with S/ 22.30 using the same code.
- Check whether you need an appointment or can walk inThe Migraciones procedure page and the regulation require an online appointment. A Migraciones press release announces walk-in service from 1 June 2026. Check the official page before you go.
- Go in person with your DNI and receiptYou must attend in person: your photo is taken on site. Bring your most recently issued DNI in good condition. If your previous passport was lost or stolen, also bring the sworn statement. The passport is handed over the same day.
- For a minor, one parent is enoughThe child attends in person with at least one parent, and both bring their ID. A guardian or legal representative must bring the court order or public instrument that grants representation.
- If you lose it, block it firstBlocking is free and online, using your passport or DNI number. The passport is cancelled even if you find it later. Then you apply for a new one.
What people fail to ask in time
Does your child also need a travel permit to leave Peru even with a passport?
Find out before it matters →What most people believe — and what the law says
Both parents must go to get a child's passport, or the absent parent must sign a notarized permission.
The regulation says the child is represented by «al menos uno de sus padres» (at least one parent) (D.S. 009-2023-IN, art. 33), and the Migraciones page says the same. Neither the other parent's presence nor a notarized authorization from them is required for the passport.
If I lose my passport, I can request a duplicate.
Migraciones says so on its page: «No existe el duplicado de pasaporte» (there is no duplicate passport). You block the lost one, which cancels it, and pay for a new passport.
The passport is valid for 10 years for everyone.
Ten years applies to people 18 and over. Adolescents aged 12 to 17 get 5 years, and children under 12 get 3 years (Ley 31678, art. 20-A of D. Leg. 1350).
RENIEC issues the passport, just like the DNI.
Inside Peru, the Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones issues it; abroad, the Foreign Ministry does, through the consulates (Ley 32205). RENIEC only issues the DNI, which you need for the passport.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to book a prior appointment to apply for the passport?
Official sources disagree. The regulation (D.S. 009-2023-IN, art. 31) and Migraciones' gob.pe pages, including the adult page updated on 18 September 2026, require an online appointment. A Migraciones press release of 27 May 2026 announces that from 1 June 2026 service is walk-in, by order of arrival. Confirm on the official Migraciones page before you go.
When and where do I pay the fee?
Before you go. It is S/ 120.90, according to the gob.pe page updated on 18 September 2026: on Págalo.pe with code 01810 or at Banco de la Nación, giving the holder's DNI number. The press release of 27 May 2026, describing the 28–30 May rollout phase, adds that payment could also be made at Migraciones offices with Yape or a POS card terminal.
What should I do first if my DNI has incorrect data?
Fix it first. Migraciones asks for your most recently issued DNI, in good condition and with up-to-date information. Also, if you change your DNI data later and RENIEC issues you a new DNI, Migraciones cancels the passport (D.S. 009-2023-IN, art. 36, item f).
Can I get a passport with an expired DNI?
If you are 18 or older, yes, as long as it is your most recently issued DNI and its information is up to date (D.S. 009-2023-IN, art. 22-B). For a minor with an expired DNI, Migraciones checks that a DNI application is already under way at RENIEC.
