How do you get, renew or replace a Peruvian DNI?

Short answer

An adult's DNI is valid for ten years; a child under twelve gets one valid for three. Reniec now issues only the electronic DNI. Renewal and replacement fees depend on your type of DNI, and a DNI issued after you turn sixty does not expire.

How long a DNI lasts

The DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad) is the Peruvian national ID card. Ley 32237, published on 10 January 2025, changed article 37 of Ley 26497, the law that governs Reniec, the national identity registry. Validity now depends on age:

WhoValidity
Child under twelveThree years, renewable for the same period
DNI issued after age twelveUntil you turn seventeen
AdultTen years, renewable for the same period
DNI issued after you turn sixtyNo expiry (art. 39 of Ley 26497)

The sixty-year rule applies to a DNI issued after that age. The DNI you already had expires on the printed date. Reniec’s renewal page says people over sixty receive a DNI marked «No caduca» (does not expire).

Reniec now issues only the electronic DNI (DNIe). If you still have the older blue DNI (DNI azul), a renewal or replacement moves you to the electronic one.

What each procedure costs

These amounts come from the official procedure pages on gob.pe. Check the date on each page before you pay, because the fees change.

First DNI for a child (age 0 to 16): S/ 16.00, code 00647, according to the page updated on 14 September 2026. The page calls it a campaign price until 31 December 2026. It is done in person. The child must attend unless under eight months old.

Renewal, age 17 and over, according to the page updated on 8 September 2026:

  • From the blue DNI to the electronic DNI: S/ 30.00, code 02121, “valid until 31 December 2026”.
  • Adult electronic DNI: S/ 41.00, code 00525.
  • Child with an electronic DNI turning seventeen: S/ 41.00, code 00521.
  • You can renew from sixty days before the expiry date.

Renewal for children: S/ 16.00, code 00647, until 31 December 2026, according to the page updated on 21 September 2026. It is done in person.

Replacement (loss, theft or damage), according to the page updated on 8 September 2026: blue DNI S/ 30.00 (code 02121), electronic DNI S/ 35.00 (code 00522), child’s DNI S/ 16.00 (code 00647).

People with disabilities: renewal and replacement are free and done in person.

A figure that does not match

The same official replacement page gives two amounts for the electronic DNI: S/ 35.00 with code 00522 online or at an office, and S/ 33.00 with code 05221 at an Agente Reniec (a self-service kiosk). We do not know which one applies to your case. Check the page before you pay.

When the law makes the DNI free

Ley 32237 added article 37.7: Reniec issues the DNI free of charge to update the photo of a child living in poverty or extreme poverty, when correcting or renewing the DNI of an adult who declares they are an organ donor, in cases it authorises by internal resolution (resolución jefatural), and in any other cases set by law. Outside those cases, you pay.

If your DNI has expired

For the 2026 general election, Reniec extended expired DNIs for voting only. Its official note of 3 April 2026 says the expired card is “not valid for other procedures”.

For travel, Migraciones says Peruvians can enter Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador “only with a valid DNI”. A DNI is also accepted for tourist travel to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

One rule says something different. Article 7 of Decreto Legislativo 1246, published on 10 November 2016, states that an expired DNI “is not an obstacle” to civil, commercial, administrative, notarial, registry, judicial and police matters where you must prove your identity. Decreto Legislativo 1310, published on 30 December 2016, did not change that text, but its fourth final supplementary provision states that article 7 does not exempt you from the duty to renew your DNI. We did not confirm whether article 7 was otherwise amended, and Reniec’s 2026 note says the opposite for procedures outside elections.

Your address and other details

The law requires you to keep details such as your address and civil status up to date. If you do not, article 37.3 of Ley 26497 sets a fine of S/ 16.50, which Reniec can collect through coercive collection (cobranza coactiva). When you renew, you can update your address with a utility bill or municipal tax receipt no more than six months old. For errors in your details, see correcting your data at Reniec.

Nobody can keep your DNI

Article 30 of Ley 26497 forbids anyone from seizing or holding on to your DNI. We cover this in can a building, gym or hotel keep your ID?. Public offices also cannot demand a photocopy: see public offices and DNI photocopies.

How to file

  1. Work out which procedure you needFirst DNI, renewal or replacement (*duplicado*). A replacement is only possible while your DNI is still valid and more than sixty days from its expiry date. If it has expired or is about to, you need a renewal.
  2. Pay the fee with the right codePay at Banco de la Nación or on Pagalo.pe, or generate a ticket on Reniec's payment site to pay by Yape or at a BCP agent. Keep the receipt.
  3. Apply online or at an officeIf you already hold an adult electronic DNI, you can renew online by verifying your identity in the DNIBioFacial app. Procedures for children, and the switch from a child's DNI to an adult one, are done in person at a Reniec office or a Centro MAC (a government one-stop service centre).
  4. Collect the DNI in personCheck the status of your application. When it shows 100%, collect the DNI where you applied. An adult's electronic DNI is handed over in person, because you must set the PIN for your digital signature.

What most people believe — and what the law says

The belief

A DNI lasts eight years.

The law

Since Ley 32237, published on 10 January 2025, an adult's DNI is valid for ten years. Some copies of the law still online say eight.

The belief

A baby's first DNI is free.

The law

In September 2026 the official procedure page charges S/ 16.00 for a child's first DNI. The law provides a free DNI only in specific cases, such as updating the photo of a child living in poverty.

The belief

Once you turn sixty, your DNI stops expiring.

The law

A DNI issued after you turn sixty does not expire. The DNI you already had still expires on the date printed on it.

The belief

An expired DNI still works for everything.

The law

For the 2026 general election, Reniec extended expired DNIs for voting only, and said they are not valid for other procedures. On the other hand, article 7 of Decreto Legislativo 1246 says an expired DNI is not an obstacle to civil, commercial, administrative, notarial, registry, judicial or police matters, although Decreto Legislativo 1310 states that this does not exempt you from renewing it. To travel to the Andean Community countries, Migraciones requires a valid DNI.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a replacement if my DNI has already expired?

No. According to Reniec's procedure page, a replacement is only possible while the DNI is valid and not within the sixty days before it expires. In that case you need a renewal instead.

Do I need a police report to replace a stolen DNI?

It is not a requirement. Reniec recommends reporting the theft so nobody else can use your DNI, but the replacement procedure does not ask for the report.

Does a replacement DNI come with a new expiry date?

No. The replacement keeps the same details and the same expiry date as your previous DNI, and is marked «Duplicado».

How long does it take to get the DNI?

The adult renewal page says about ten business days. The pages for children say about fifteen business days. If you ask to change the pickup office, you pay S/ 5.00 more and the wait gets longer.
