I Lost My DNI or Passport Abroad, or They Were Stolen: What Do I Do?
These are two separate procedures, and you may need one or both. If you lost or had your passport stolen and need to travel, apply for a salvoconducto: a travel document valid for 30 non-extendable calendar days, only to return to Peru or your country of residence. If you lost or had your DNI stolen and it was still valid, request a duplicate at the consulate; if it had already expired or was about to, the correct procedure is renewal, not a duplicate. Both are requested in person at the nearest consulate, paid in local currency, though the DNI procedure can also be done online at 58 of Peru's 202 consulates.

Two documents, two different procedures
Losing your wallet abroad, or having it stolen, usually means losing your DNI and your passport at the same time — but for the Peruvian state, these are two separate problems with two separate solutions at the consulate. Mixing them up is what slows the process down most: requesting the wrong document, or assuming one fixes the other.
Your passport is your document for traveling internationally. If you lost it, had it stolen, or it got damaged, and you need to get back to Peru or your country of residence, what the consulate gives you is a salvoconducto: an emergency travel document, not a new passport. Your DNI, on the other hand, is your identity document for everything else — and replacing it means a duplicate or a renewal, depending on whether the one you lost was still valid.
Why the DNI isn’t just any document
Before getting into the procedures, it’s worth understanding why losing the DNI is a real problem, not just an inconvenience. Reniec’s Organic Law establishes this in Article 26: the DNI “is a public, personal, non-transferable document. It constitutes the only Personal Identity Card for all civil, commercial, administrative, and judicial acts and, in general, for every case in which, by legal mandate, it must be presented.” And Article 30 reinforces that exclusivity from the other side: “for identification purposes, no person, authority, or official may require, under any circumstance, the presentation of a document other than the National Identity Document (DNI). Nor may the document be confiscated or retained.”
In other words, there’s no alternative document that works the same way as the DNI before the Peruvian state. That’s why, if you lose it abroad, the goal is to get the DNI itself back — not a substitute — as soon as possible.
If you lost your passport and need to travel: the salvoconducto
The official Ministry of Foreign Affairs page describes the salvoconducto this way: “you can apply for a salvoconducto at the consular offices of the country where you are, which will allow you to return to Peru or your country of residence.” In other words, it’s a document built for one single purpose: letting you travel back, not replacing your passport more generally.
Its validity is short and non-negotiable: “The validity of this document is 30 non-extendable calendar days, counted from the date it is issued. During this period, you must return to Peru or your place of residence.” If you don’t travel within those 30 days, the document stops working and you’d have to start the process over.
To apply, you need your DNI — or, if you don’t have that either, just the number is enough — and if it’s for a minor, the procedure can be done by one of the parents or their legal representative, properly identified and accredited as such. The cost is paid at the consulate, in local currency, according to the rate that particular office sets; the delivery timeline is also decided by each consular office, so it’s worth asking directly how long it will take before you plan your trip around it.
If you lost the DNI (passport intact): duplicate or renewal
If what you lost, had stolen, or damaged was the DNI — and you still have your passport, or don’t need to travel right away — the procedure that applies to you is different. The official page sums it up this way: “If you lose your DNI, have it stolen, or it’s damaged or in very bad condition, you can request a duplicate at the consular offices of the country where you are. If you’re doing this procedure because of theft, we suggest reporting the incident to the local authorities.”
There’s an important condition worth checking before starting the process: a duplicate only applies if your previous DNI was still valid. The same page states this plainly: “This process can only be carried out if the previous document was valid.” If your DNI had already expired, or was about to, what applies to you isn’t a duplicate but a renewal — as the Reniec Services at Consulates page also confirms: “If your DNI has expired or is about to expire, we recommend doing the renewal procedure; for that, in addition to the payment, you’ll need to bring one (1) color, passport-size photo with a white background.”
Another point worth knowing before you start: once you begin the duplicate process, there’s no turning back. The official page is explicit: “Once you start the process, you cannot request its cancellation, and the duplicate will carry the same identifying details, characteristics, and expiration date as the previous one, along with a note that it’s a ‘duplicate.’” So if there’s any chance your original DNI might turn up soon, it’s worth waiting before starting the process — though since the duplicate has no practical downside compared to the original (same expiration date, same details, and new digital certificates), you don’t have to risk going without a document over it either.
How the procedure works
For both cases — duplicate and renewal — the procedure starts from the same point: “You have to appear in person at the nearest Peruvian Consulate. Payment for the procedure fee is made there, in local currency, according to the fee set.” In other words, in most cases you have to go in person.
There’s an exception worth checking before assuming you have to show up in person: Reniec has a presence at 202 consular offices in 78 countries, and at 58 of them — not all — there’s a virtual procedure. The official page confirms it: “With the App DNI Biofacial, 58 consulates carry out virtual renewal, duplicate, and address-correction services for the DNI.” If your consulate is among those 58, you may not need to appear physically; it’s worth confirming directly with your consulate before arranging an in-person appointment you might not need.
How much it costs and how long it takes
Neither the cost nor the delivery timeline is the same at every consulate: both are set by each consular office based on its own rate and its own workload. As a reference for what one particular consulate charges, the Consulado General del Perú in Phoenix charges 20.00 soles consulares for the salvoconducto (roughly the dollar equivalent at its own exchange rate), but this is just one consulate’s example — yours may charge a different amount. The most reliable approach is to check the amount and the timeline directly with the consular office that covers you.
How to file
- If it was a theft, report it to the local policeThe official gob.pe page expressly recommends this for the DNI duplicate procedure when it's due to theft, and it's also worth having if you have travel insurance that asks for it.
- If you need to travel and don't have a passport: apply for a salvoconductoThis is an emergency travel document, valid for 30 non-extendable calendar days from when it's issued, only for returning to Peru or your country of residence. You can apply by giving your DNI number even without the physical card with you.
- If you only lost the DNI and it was still valid: request a duplicateThe duplicate will carry the same details as your previous DNI, with a note that it's a duplicate, and the process can't be canceled once it's started.
- If your DNI had already expired or was about to: request renewal, not a duplicateA duplicate only applies if the previous document was still valid. For renewal you also need a color, passport-size photo with a white background.
- Check whether your consulate offers the virtual procedure through the App DNI Biofacial58 of Peru's 202 consulates worldwide allow DNI renewal, duplicates, and address corrections without going in person. Check directly with your consulate whether yours is one of them.
- Pay the fee in local currency and pick up the document on the date givenPayment is made at the consulate itself, in the currency of the country where you are, at the rate that office sets. The delivery timeline is also set by each consular office.
What people fail to ask in time
Do you know what passport procedure you'll need to do as soon as you're back in Peru with a salvoconducto?
Find out before it matters →What most people believe — and what the law says
If I lose my DNI or passport abroad, I'm stranded and can't get back to Peru.
Not true. For the passport, there's the salvoconducto — an emergency travel document the consulate issues specifically so you can return. For the DNI, even without the physical card, the official salvoconducto page accepts giving your DNI number instead of presenting the document itself.
The salvoconducto replaces my passport and I can keep using it to travel afterward.
No. Its validity is 30 non-extendable calendar days from the date it's issued, and it's only for the trip back to Peru or your country of residence. Once you're back, you have to apply for a new passport like anyone else.
I can request a DNI duplicate at the consulate even if it had already expired.
Not quite. The official page is clear: a duplicate "can only be issued if the previous document was still valid." If your DNI had already expired, or was about to, what applies to you is renewal, not a duplicate — and renewal also requires a passport-size color photo with a white background.
If I start the duplicate process and then my original DNI turns up, I can cancel the process.
No. The official page says this expressly: "once you start the process, you cannot request its cancellation." The duplicate gets issued regardless, with the same details as the original plus a note that it's a duplicate.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a DNI duplicate or a salvoconducto cost at the consulate?
Payment is made at the consulate, in local currency, "according to the fee set" by each office — there's no single published rate worldwide. As a reference, the Consulado General del Perú in Phoenix charges 20.00 soles consulares for the salvoconducto (roughly the dollar equivalent at its own exchange rate), but the amount may be different at your consulate.
What do I do if my DNI and passport were both stolen at the same time?
These are two separate procedures you'll likely need to do both: the salvoconducto so you can travel back, and the DNI duplicate (or its renewal, if it had already expired) to get your identity document back. The official page also recommends reporting the theft to the local authorities.
Can I handle the DNI procedure without going to the consulate in person?
At 58 of Peru's 202 consulates worldwide, yes: the App DNI Biofacial allows DNI renewal, duplicates, and address corrections to be done virtually. If your consulate isn't among those 58, you'll need to go in person.
Do I have to report the theft to the police in the country where I am?
The official gob.pe page expressly recommends it when the procedure is due to theft: "we suggest reporting the incident to the local authorities." It isn't cited as a mandatory requirement for the consular procedure itself, but it's worth doing anyway, among other reasons because travel insurance may ask for it.
Does the salvoconducto work if I don't live in Peru but in another country?
Yes. The official page expressly says the salvoconducto lets you "return to Peru or your country of residence" — it isn't limited to people who live in Peru.
