How do you get a single status certificate in Peru, and how much does it cost?

Short answer

In Peru a single status certificate is issued as a constancia negativa de inscripción de matrimonio (a certificate that no marriage is registered). It comes from the municipality where your birth was registered or from Reniec, which charges S/ 4.10 (code 06645) in person or through its online filing desk. To use it abroad, you apostille it.

What it is called and who issues it

Peru has no document officially named a “single status certificate”. What you ask for is a constancia negativa de inscripción de matrimonio: a certificate stating that no marriage of yours is registered.

Reniec’s page explains that this certificate shows there is no entry in the civil registries incorporated into Reniec or in the records of its registry offices. That is why it matters where your birth was registered. (Reniec is the national identity and civil registry.)

Municipality or Reniec: what the official pages say

The two official sources do not say it the same way:

  • The PCM page on gob.pe (updated in May 2022) says you request it at the municipality of the district where your birth was registered, and that if that district was incorporated into Reniec you can go to any Reniec office.
  • Reniec’s FAQ says you pay S/ 4.10 and go to any Reniec office, without that condition. Reniec’s procedure page (updated on 29 October 2025) also lets you request it online.

If you were born in a district whose civil registry is still kept by the municipality, first check with Reniec whether your record is in its system. If it is not, the PCM page sends you to that municipality, and each municipality sets its own fee.

What Reniec charges

S/ 4.10, with payment code 06645, according to Reniec’s procedure page updated on 29 October 2025. Its FAQ gives the same amount and code. You can pay by Yape or at a BCP agent (with a ticket you generate on Reniec’s payments site), at Banco de la Nación or through Págalo.pe.

Online or in person

Online: you log in to Reniec’s online filing desk (mesa de partes virtual) as an individual, identify yourself with your DNI (number, check digit and issue date), choose «Registro de Documento», enter the email for the reply, upload your request and attach the receipt. The page says the certificate arrives at that email or in «Mis Documentos» in the filing desk. You need the DNI of an adult and a request that states precisely what you are asking for; Reniec publishes a form and instructions.

In person: you go to a Reniec service center or a Centro MAC with the receipt and the details of the person named on the record. You collect the certificate on the date the registrar gives you. The page sets no deadline.

Using it in another country: the apostille

If you are asked for it to marry abroad or before a foreign consulate, ask in advance whether they want it apostilled and how recent it must be. The authority marrying you decides that, not Peru.

The Foreign Ministry (Cancillería) only apostilles documents whose signature it already has on file. Its chain of certifications says:

Who issued the certificateWhat it needs before the apostille
A municipalityThe original certified by the municipal civil registrar and legalized by Reniec’s signature authenticator
ReniecThe row for Reniec’s certificates and other certifications requires certification by Reniec’s certifying officer

The chain lists a processing fee of S/ 31.00. How to request the apostille, in person or online, is on apostilling documents in Peru.

How long is it valid?

We found no law that sets a validity period. The Foreign Ministry’s chain of certifications only “suggests” it be no more than three months old for an apostille. In practice, whoever receives it sets the rule.

The sworn statement of single status

Some procedures accept a sworn statement (declaración jurada) that you are single. For example, the Municipality of La Victoria publishes on gob.pe a sworn statement form that couples use for their civil marriage. We found no rule saying which procedures accept a sworn statement instead of the certificate, so ask the office before you choose.

If you are listed as married and you are not

A single status certificate does not correct the registry. According to Reniec, if you are listed as married while single there was an improper declaration of data: the administrative route only applies to the cases in its TUPA, and outside them you need a court ruling declaring you single. Other corrections are covered in correcting your data at Reniec.

If you are a foreigner marrying in Peru

Article 248 of the Civil Code, as currently worded, requires for a civil marriage, “where applicable”, the consular certificate of single or widowed status. As the name says, it is a consular document from your country, not a Reniec certificate. What each municipality asks for is on civil marriage in Peru.

How to file

  1. Find out where your birth is registeredThe PCM page says the certificate is requested at the municipality where your birth was registered, or at Reniec if that district was incorporated into Reniec. If your certificate is already in Reniec's system, you can request it there.
  2. Pay S/ 4.10 with code 06645By Yape or at a BCP agent with a ticket you generate on Reniec's payments site, or at Banco de la Nación or Págalo.pe. Keep the receipt or a screenshot.
  3. File the request through the online filing deskLog in as an individual (Persona Natural), identify yourself with your DNI, choose «Registro de Documento», enter the email for the reply, and upload your request and the receipt. Write down the case number.
  4. Or do it in personTake the receipt and the details of the person named on the record to a Reniec service center or a Centro MAC (government one-stop center). You collect the certificate on the date they give you.
  5. If it is for use abroad, apostille itCheck the chain of certifications for the prior signature your certificate needs, then request the apostille from the Foreign Ministry.

What people fail to ask in time

Does your DNI still say single although you married, or married although you divorced?

What most people believe — and what the law says

The belief

The single status certificate is a separate document that only the municipality issues.

The law

Reniec issues it as a constancia negativa de inscripción de matrimonio. Its page says so: «Si te han pedido una Constancia de Soltería, puedes solicitarla como Constancia Negativa de Inscripción de Matrimonio». It costs S/ 4.10 and can be requested online.

The belief

By law, the certificate expires after three months.

The law

We found no law that sets a validity period. The three months come from the Foreign Ministry's chain of certifications, which only «suggests» the certificate be no more than three months old for an apostille. The authority asking for it decides whether to accept it.

The belief

If Reniec lists me as married by mistake, a single status certificate fixes it.

The law

According to Reniec, in that case there was an «improper declaration of data». It can be corrected administratively only in the cases listed in its TUPA (its official list of procedures); otherwise you need a court ruling that declares you single.

Frequently asked questions

Can I request it online?

Yes, from Reniec. You pay S/ 4.10 with code 06645 (Yape, a BCP agent, Banco de la Nación or Págalo.pe), log in to the online filing desk (mesa de partes virtual) as an individual with your DNI details, and upload your request and the receipt. The page says the certificate is sent to the email you gave or to «Mis Documentos» in the filing desk. You need the DNI of an adult (18 or older).

How long does it take?

Reniec's page sets no deadline. For the in-person option it says you collect the certificate on the date the registrar gives you.

How do I apostille it for use in another country?

The Foreign Ministry requires a prior signature that depends on who issued the certificate. If a municipality issued it: the original certified by the municipal civil registrar and legalized by Reniec's signature authenticator. If Reniec issued it, the closest row in the chain of certifications is the one for Reniec's certificates and other certifications: certified by Reniec's certifying officer. The chain lists a processing fee of S/ 31.00. The details are on our apostille page.

I am a foreigner marrying in Peru. What proof of single status do I need?

Article 248 of the Civil Code, as currently worded, lists among the documents for a civil marriage «el certificado consular de soltería o viudez» (a consular certificate of single or widowed status). The municipality or notary marrying you asks for it; each municipality publishes its own list. Requirements for foreigners are on our civil marriage page.
